How much ice, really?
Ice does two jobs at a cookout: chilling drinks and keeping food safe. We budget about1.1 lb per guest as a base, then add more for a long party and for keeping perishables cold all afternoon.
- Drinks & coolers: ~1.1 lb per guest
- Long party (5h+): +¼ lb per guest per extra hour for melt
- Food safety: +0.4 lb per guest if perishables sit out
Keep drink ice and food ice separate, and never reuse ice that's touched raw meat.
Ice calculator FAQ
How much ice do I need per person?
Plan for about 1 to 1.5 lbs of ice per guest for a summer party — more if you're also keeping food cold in coolers all day. On the Fourth of July, err high; ice is cheap and melts fast in the heat.
How many bags of ice for 50 people?
For 50 guests keeping food and drinks cold, you'll want roughly 8 bags (a standard bag is about 10 lbs). Enter your exact count above for the number.
When should I buy the ice?
Buy ice last — the morning of the party. Bought too early it just melts. Keep bags in a cooler or chest freezer, and store some separately for drinks vs. food safety.
