The rules of thumb we use
A backyard cookout isn't a plated dinner — guests nibble from the moment the grill lights until the last person leaves. These are the per-guest ratios experienced hosts plan around, and they're exactly what the calculator applies:
- 2.3 patties of burger patties per guest
- 1.15 dogs of hot dogs per guest
- 2.3 buns of burger buns per guest
- 1.15 buns of hot dog buns per guest
- 1.6 slices of cheese slices per guest
- 0.26 lbs of potato salad per guest
- 0.2 lbs of chips per guest
- 1.2 ears of corn on the cob per guest
- 0.23 lbs of watermelon per guest
- 0.12 bottles of condiment bottles per guest
We always round up, and up again to the nearest whole pack — running out is the one thing you can't fix mid-party, and leftovers freeze. Count children as half an adult.
Smoking a brisket or a pork butt instead? That's bought by the pound and loses about half its weight on the smoker, so it needs different math — use theBBQ calculator for those.
Cookout food FAQ
How many burgers per person at a cookout?
Plan for about 2 burgers per adult. People graze at a cookout rather than sitting down to one plated meal, so per-head numbers run higher than they would at dinner. This calculator uses 2.3 patties per guest and rounds up.
How many hot dogs per person?
Roughly 1 to 1.5 hot dogs per person. We use 1.15 per guest, which gives everyone a mix of burgers and dogs without leaving you with three untouched packs.
How much food do I need for 20, 50 or 100 people?
For 20 guests: about 46 burgers and 23 hot dogs. For 50: about 115 burgers and 58 dogs. For 100: about 230 burgers and 115 dogs. Enter your exact headcount above for the full list including buns, cheese and sides.
How many buns do I need?
Match buns one-to-one with patties and dogs, then buy one extra pack. Burger buns come in 8s and hot dog buns usually in 8s too, so the pack math rarely lands evenly — and squashed or torn buns are the most common cookout shortfall.
How much of each side dish per person?
About 4 oz of each side per guest. This calculator plans a quarter pound of potato salad, 3 oz of chips and a quarter pound of watermelon per person, plus roughly one ear of corn each.
Should I plan differently for kids?
Yes — count each child as roughly half an adult. If a third of your headcount is under twelve, subtract a sixth from your total guest number before using the calculator.
What about smoked BBQ instead of burgers?
Brisket, pulled pork and ribs are bought by the pound and lose about half their weight in the smoker, so they need completely different math. Use the BBQ calculator for those.
